For us ...

for five violoncellos

op. 17, No. 1

In 1997 the cellist, Martin Jagusch (Jena) and Jean François de Guise got to know each other. In the same year Jean François de Guise received the commission for "Five Concert Pieces" for violoncello and piano. In 1998 Martin Jagusch was to perform in a concert with his cello quintet of the music school. However, since the literature for five identical instruments was manageable, and also consisted mostly of arrangements, it made sense to commission a composition.
The result was the work "For us ...", which should also explain the title.
To write for pupils always means to submit to certain restrictions, since the skills on the instrument still have to be learned.
However, it was far from the composer's mind to compose a piece that would be banal or without any challenge. In consultation with Martin Jagusch, various degrees of difficulty were determined for the parts to be distributed, with which Jean François de Guise could work.
A piece that represents real music of the 21st century, and that is also suitable for professionals, was the result. With its complex rhythmic layout, 12-note harmony, and well-developed dynamics throughout, the work has everything it needs for a successful performance. This was impressively proven by the premiere, which took place in the year of its composition.
