(1908-11, rev. 1943)
for 2 violins, viola, and violoncello

From 1908 to 1911, Béla Bartók (1881-1945) wrote the piano pieces For Children [Gyermekeknek]. They are based exclusively on folk melodies that Bartók collected and wrote down during his travels to villages in Hungary and neighboring countries. Primarily designed for piano lessons, they remain an indispensable part of basic music education today, along with the similarly pedagogically oriented piano cycle Mikrokosmos and the 44 Duos for Two Violins. In 1943, Bartók revised For Children and added titles (here in German and English) to some of the movements. The original metronome markings are indicated in brackets after the respective tempo word.
