Bartók, Béla
For children
[Gyermekeknek]
Volume I and II
(1908-11, rev. 1943)
for violin, viola and violoncello
From 1908 to 1911, Béla Bartók (1881-1945) wrote the piano pieces For Children [Gyermekeknek], collected in two volumes. They are based exclusively on folk melodies that Bartók collected and wrote down on his travels to the villages of Hungary and neighboring countries. Conceived primarily for piano lessons, together with the equally pedagogically oriented piano cycle Mikrokosmos and the 44 duos for two violins, they are still an indispensable part of basic musical training today.
In 1943, Bartók revised For Children and added titles (here in German and English) to some of the movements. The original metronome markings are given in brackets after the respective tempo word.
The present edition offers a selection which was made for string trio according to aspects of tonal and technical feasibility.
