Old Dance Tunes
from: “Hungarian Peasant Songs” for piano

Béla Bartók (1881-1945) travelled through the villages of Hungary and its neighbouring countries on musical-ethnological research trips, collecting and notating innumerable folk melodies. Within this context, the 15 Hungarian Peasant Songs [15 magyar parasztdal] were composed for piano between 1914 and 1918. The section Old Dance Tunes [Régi Táncdalok] has been arranged for string quartet in the current edition. The original metronome markings are provided in brackets after the relevant tempo indication for the nine pieces in the score and the individual parts.
