Béla Bartók (1881-1945) composed the Sonatina and the Romanian Folk Dances for piano in 1915. These works are amongst Bartók’s most popular compositions alongside the educationally oriented collections Mikrokosmos and For Children also originally for piano. Particularly the Romanian Folk Dances have been utilised for numerous varied arrangements since the time of their composition.

The current transcriptions for string quartet have been made on the basis of the original versions of these works for piano.
