Jusdorff, Johann Carl
Deux Airs Russes Variés
for flute and guitar Opus 12
New edition based on the first printing by Jean André
There are few composers about whom prints of their works are preserved in the archives, but about whom not even the life data can be found in the major music encyclopedias, in the catalogs of the major international libraries, and even on the Internet. One of them is Johann Carl Jusdorff, of whom Göttingen is mentioned as the only place of activity and whose works were printed between 1799 and 1820 by major publishing houses of the time such as Schott in Mainz or André in Offenbach. With his many variation works for flute and his arrangements of folk songs with accompaniment of guitar and often also flute, he probably hit a nerve of the time for a short time, only to disappear again just as quickly into oblivion and be forgotten. His Variations op.1 were even so successful that they experienced a second edition after 10 years. Probably he was a very good flutist, who composed a large part of his works, including his probably 3 flute concertos, mainly for his own use. Or he wrote them for his students, as the dedication of his Variations op.18 might suggest: "dedicated to the lovers of this instrument for practice in multiform changes". In the "Deux Airs russes Variés" op.12, virtuosity is required of the flutist in the variations, while the guitar accompanies mainly with simple chords.
