The four Impromptus opus 90 are among the most famous piano pieces by Franz Schubert (1797-1828). He composed it in 1827, a year before his death.
Especially the first piece in C minor with its many characteristic rhythmic chords (beginning up to bar 40) and tone repetitions (from bar 74) can be ideally represented with string instruments.
Two details: the fortissimo “G” at the beginning has an equivalent at the beginning of Beethoven's Great Fugue for string quartet; and the repeating triplets on "G" (e.g. bar 87) are reminiscent of Schubert's Erlkönig.
