Franz Schubert's (1797-1828) works for piano four hands form the main part of his oeuvre, along with his more than 600 songs. No other great composer left so many works for piano four hands. Among these, the Fantasia in F minor, opus 103, is one of Schubert's most important piano compositions ever. It was composed in 1828 and first performed by him in private with his friend Franz Lachner (1803-1890).

The work is dedicated to Mademoiselle la Comtesse Caroline Esterházy de Galantha.
