Jusdorff, Johann Carl
2me Concerto pour la Flute
New edition based on the first printing by B. Schott from the collection of Dr. Eckart Rohlfs.
There are few composers about whom prints of their works are preserved in the archives, but about whom not even the life data can be found in the major music encyclopedias, in the catalogs of the major international libraries, and even on the Internet. One of them is Johann Carl Jusdorff, whose only place of activity is mentioned as Göttingen and whose works were printed between 1799 and 1820 by major publishing houses of the time such as Schott in Mainz or André in Offenbach. With his many variation works for flute and his arrangements of folk songs with accompaniment of guitar and often also flute, he probably hit a nerve of the time for a short time, only to disappear just as quickly into oblivion and be forgotten again shortly thereafter. His Variations op.1 were even so successful that they experienced a second edition after 10 years. Probably he was a very good flutist who composed a large part of his works, including his probably 3 flute concertos, mainly for his own use. Or he wrote them for his students, as the dedication of the variations might suggest: "dedicated to the lovers of this instrument for practice in multiform changes". His three flute concertos were probably written toward the end of his career. The first bears the highest known opus number 28, the other two are merely numbered consecutively.
The 2nd flute concerto presented here is in three movements: an expansive first movement with a long orchestral introduction is followed by a short three-part slow movement (Adagio) and a variation finale so typical of Jusdorff.
