Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus
Sonata in E minor

KV 304

for 2 violins, viola, and violoncello

Arranged for string quartet by Claus-D. Ludwig based on the original piano and violin sonata

The two-movement Sonata in E minor, K. 304, for piano and violin by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791), composed in 1778, is unique for a number of reasons. it is in a minor key, which was extremely rare for Mozart; with its intimate, melancholic character, it dispenses with brilliant virtuosity, and in addition to the few typical piano accompaniment figures, polyphonic structures such as imitation and canon occupy a large space. A special feature of the minuet is the eight-bar descending bass line, which recurs frequently and is reminiscent of Baroque forms such as the passacaglia or chaconne (first in the viola, then in the violoncello).
