Guise Jean François de
Concerto
for two solo violas and orchestra
op. 8, No. 1 (1999)
This concerto was written in 1999 on behalf of the Jena Youth Symphony Orchestra. The work, which also corresponds more to a chamber orchestra in its instrumentation, can be performed by amateurs as well as professionals.
The soloists‘ parts are also designed so that they can be mastered by advanced pupils or students. Nevertheless, the work contains everything that can be found in larger orchestral pieces.
The contemporary sound holds many colors, which, however, never seem obtrusive.
Clear structures allow the players as well as the listeners to follow effortlessly.
The fact that de Guise chose a very classical approach here is due on the one hand to the fact that the commission was based on clear wishes, and on the other hand to the fact that the structure and use of thematically recurring motifs were intended to facilitate the work.
Even though the arrangement is rather small, de Guise uses the time in the approximately 6 minutes to set some accents and to bring us closer to his sound world. In any case, it is a beautiful work that paves the way into the world of soloist concertos.
