Guise Jean François de
Humble Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano
op. 25, No. 16
Simple or modest, as the English word "humble" describes it, the trio is only at the beginning. The piece slowly builds up with a big line in the cello, but then abruptly ends in a furious part, which finally, this time played by the violin, finds its way back to the first tempo and then disappears again into nothingness. The piano alone has the very last passage. Each of the three instruments takes on a part as a soloist and the classic trio formation only plays in the middle part, which makes this trio unique.
The quiet, very transparent composition by Jean François de Guise, which demands a high degree of musicality and sound art from the players, although free-tonal, catches the ear and also overwhelms an audience that is unfamiliar with “new music”.
This trio was composed in 2015 for a British piano trio and was supposed to act as an encore. This is probably one of the reasons why the composer chose such a concise form. But, the 3:30 minutes are worth listening to and are always suitable for being heard with other works.
