Guise Jean François de
Barzelletta per flauto, contrabbasso e pianoforte
op. 25, No. 5

Barzelletta, joke or something not to be taken seriously, if a piece is named like that, it can only be musical fun.
In fact, the line-up is already unusual, even though the three instruments complement each other perfectly and offer exciting possibilities.
Ingo Burghausen, principal double bass player of the Anhaltische Philharmonie, commissioned Jean François de Guise in 2008 to compose something for this line-up.
The piece begins very agile and rhythmically fast. You immediately notice that everything is really meant to be a joke. In the middle section, however, it becomes quieter and Jean François de Guise strikes a different note. Almost melancholy he lets it begin in chords on the piano before the double bass begins to play with a very vocal passage. If the flute is added, the picture of a “canzonette” is completed. As soon as you have settled in while listening, the theme breaks loose from the beginning and brings the work to its end just as vividly that, as is typical for the composer, ends with a soft, sonorous finish.
